Big Sur is located on California's Central Coast approximately 150 miles (240km) south of San Francisco. The 90 mile long stretch of coastline begins south of Carmel and continues south to San Simeon where the Hearst Castle is located. California's Scenic Highway One winds through the entire length of the Big Sur Area.
This area was referred to as "El Sur Grande" or The Big South by the Mexican settlers. It was the wilderness area, mostly uninhabited, south of Monterey. It later became know as Big Sur.
The Big Sur beaches exhibit the rugged and rocky nature of the Pacific Coastline. Big Sur, in some areas, marks the start of the Pacific coastal mountains. In a number of areas they ascend quickly out of the sea. In a very short distance, you find yourself elevated several hundred feet above the Pacific Ocean, gazing down upon it. The rough and jagged coastline proved to be a difficult task to navigate by early sailors.
The Coastal Redwood tree flourishes in this area of the Pacific coast. Big Sur is home to many magnificent redwood groves. The trees have a distinctive red-brown bark and wood. The redwood trees grow naturally in Central and Northern California, on a small strip near the ocean. They thrive on the summer fog and an abundance of rain in the winter. A few of the giant redwoods have a base of 10-20 feet in diameter, and are several thousand years old.
Below are sections of photos from some of the State Parks and Beaches located in Big Sur. I plan to include groups of photographs from Rocky Point, Andrew Molera State Park, Pfeiffer-Big Sur State Park, Pfeiffer Beach, Julia Pfeiffer-Burns State Park, and Limekiln State Park. The names may seem similar but they are all different sections of Big Sur. I hope to have this section of my web page completed in the near future. If you like the photos available for viewing, please check back periodically to see the new additions. I hope you enjoy the photographs.
